Fall Decluttering Hotspots In Your Home

If you live in the midwest, like me, fall means leaves changing colors and the air turns crisp. Perfect time to embrace the fall cozy vibes! But before you start the fireplace and snuggle on the couch with a nice warm mug of hot chocolate, it might be a good idea to tackle the clutter that accumulated from summer.

Ugh, I know! But trust me, a little decluttering now is worth it!

Let’s talk about the hotspots around your home you should focus on and how to declutter them, so you can get back to pumpkin-spiced lattes asap!

Also, it’s OK if you only have time to get to 1 of these areas. It’s hard to get to all of them, especially if you haven’t decluttered in a while.

The Forgotten Corners: Attic and Basement

🫣 The attic and basement often become storage catch-alls, accumulating items that are rarely used or even forgotten. Take a deep breath and dive into these forgotten corners. REMEMBER: It’s a process, so try to dedicate 30-60 minutes for each session. It can take time depending on the amount of stuff you have. It won’t be done in 1 day.

  • Sort through seasonal items: Donate or discard any winter clothing or accessories that are no longer in good condition.

  • Purge unused items: Get rid of anything you haven't used in the past year. Chances are, you won't need it in the future.

  • Organize storage: Use bins and labels to keep items organized and easily accessible.

The Seasonal Shift: Closets and Dressers

With the changing seasons, it's time to switch out your wardrobe. Take this opportunity to declutter your closets and drawers. If you have kids, this is a great time for donating clothes that no longer fit them. The Out in the Open Rule and Didn’t Know Rule are great for clothes!

Out in the Open Rule and Didn’t Know Rule were coined by The Minimalists and are so helpful! I use them all the time.

👚 Out in the Open Rule: The rule asks you to dump everything out in one area so you can see everything you have. Once you can see the sheer amount of clutter all at once, it helps you decide what you need, and, more importantly, what you don’t. So when you realize you have 15 black T-shirts, it might be time to donate half of them.

👠 Didn’t Know Rule: If you find something you didn’t know you owned, you can permit yourself to let go.

So, as you go through the closets and draws keep this in mind:

  • Donate unwanted items: Give away clothing or accessories you no longer wear or don’t fit.

  • Organize by season: Store seasonal items in a designated area to keep your closet organized.

  • Repair or replace: If there are any items that need repair, take care of them now. Otherwise, it's time to say goodbye.

The Heart of Your Home: Kitchen and Pantry

The kitchen is a hub of activity, and it can easily become cluttered. Take some time to declutter your kitchen and pantry. I could probably do this monthly. Those expiration dates sneak up on you quickly!

  • Check expiration dates: Toss any expired food items.

  • Organize pantry items: Group similar items together and label shelves for easy access.

  • Declutter countertops: Keep your countertops clear and clutter-free.

The Sanctuary: Bedroom and Bathroom

Your bedroom and bathroom should be places of relaxation. Decluttering these spaces can help you unwind and sleep better.

  • Declutter your bedside table: Keep only essential items on your bedside table.

  • Organize your dresser drawers: Fold clothes neatly and group similar items together.

  • Purge expired toiletries: Toss any expired makeup, skincare products, or medications.

Decluttering your home can be a rewarding experience. By taking the time to declutter these hotspots, you'll create a more organized and inviting space. Remember, a little effort now can lead to a much more enjoyable fall season.
